2010 Mobile Strategy

by Michael Santoroski on February 15, 2010

2010 is going to be a big year for the Roanoke College mobile strategy. Right now we have four initiatives for the year.

#1 – New iPhone/Android Home Page

Now in “preview” at i.roanoke.edu, our new home page was designed by New City in Blacksburg, Va, who also designed our home page and sports page. We plan to keep our “old” mobile site up at m.roanoke.edu for Windows Mobile and Blackberry users.

Datatel Mobile - Courses#2 – Datatel Mobile App

We hope to be first in line to deploy the Datatel Mobile app for students, faculty and staff when it releases in the first half of this year. They are promising iPhone OS, Android and Blackberry versions.

This app will feature course listings, directory, news, events and more. Ultimately, we hope to be able to brand this app as Roanoke College, but our current understanding is that custom branding has been pulled from the 1.0 roadmap.

#3 – Sports Mobile App

Our athletics vendor, Internet Consulting Services, has a new iPhone OS app. We have requested a demo and pricing. If things work out, I would like to see this deployed in time for Fall 2010 Sports.

#4 – Continue the Development of the Admissions Mobile App

Finally, we will continue to devote resources to our Admissions Mobile app that we developed for counselors. We will also manage the migration of our counselors from Windows Mobile to Android based phones.

The Admissions Mobile app has been very popular with the counselors and the coaching staff, and has given them a strategic advantage when out in the field (and while at their desk, too!).
